10 Resources in Mexico - Expat Life - Getting Started in Exploring Abroad
Table of Contents
As we travel throughout Mexico, we have been able to form relationships with communities and want to be able to share some resources if you are thinking of moving to Mexico, visiting for an extended time, or traveling through. We hope you will find this helpful.
San Miguel de Allende-Resources
Expat Community Resource Center Center. The center caters to the foreign community and offers Newcomers, Residents, and Friends a soft place in a foreign country. They provide deeply discounted, vetted, on-site services and referrals to a variety of services such as relocation, residency, rentals, tours, Spanish classes, tours, and much more.
Ajijic/Lake Chapala-Resources
Social Networks
Mel’s Social Casa. Mel’s Social Casa is a great place to connect and meet new people. You can play cribbage, poker, other card games, board games, swim in the pool, play pickleball, and/or sit by the bar. From time to time they have classes you can take (i.e. Spanish class) and other special events. Everyone is so friendly.
The Lake Chapala Society (LCS). The mission of the Lake Chapala Society, AC (the “Association”) is to promote the active participation of Lakesides’ inhabitants to improve their quality of life. By making this commitment we signal to the community that our focus is based not just on expatriates, but everyone living at Lakeside.
LCS is another place to connect with other expats in the local community to build friendships, support the local community, attend events and enjoy the beautiful surroundings and grounds right on Lake Chapala. LCS also has the largest English library in Latin America, I’m told, so if you like to read, this place is for you! Oftentimes there is opportunity to take a trip together with others, or you can visit the restaurant and listen to live music or do yoga with the classes they offer.
Dentists
Dr. Haro’s Office, visit their website here. They have two offices, one in Guadalajara, and the other in Ajijic (Riberas).
Dr. Jessica Flores. Located in Ajijic.

First Class Bus Lines

ETN. This is another first-class bus line that is in Mexico that we have thoroughly enjoyed. We are working on our video, stay tuned.
Shuttle Service
Local Transportation
Each city within Mexico has public buses you can take or a local taxi. While they are beneficial, Mexico also offers the following, but keep in mind they are not available everywhere in Mexico:
Hostels
If you are a backpacker, budget traveler, or solo traveler, you probably have heard of hostels.
Hostels are a great way to connect with others who may be on the same adventure you are on, have a social atmosphere built in wherever you travel, and have access to local activities, tours, and excursions. Some, even provide an authentic breakfast in the morning, included in the nightly rate.
While we use Booking.com to search for hostels, we also use Hostelworld.com.
Food Delivery Services
Mexico offers food delivery service via apps that you can download on your phone. Not only do they deliver food, but they can pick up food for you at a grocery store, or even visit a pharmacy on your behalf and pick up items. They are very convenient. While these services below work in some cites in Mexico, they have not expanded to work in all cities and town in Mexico.
Learn Spanish
While in Mexico, it’s important to be able to communicate in the local language. There are classes you can take in your local area which help you to learn the basics and there are many teachers you can meet locally, who teach private lessons. In addition, it’s helpful to have some tools to assist while learning. There are also immersion classes.
Google Translate. Download this app, it will help you to read restaurant menus, translate a word on the spot, and/or communicate with locals.
Escuela Mexicana – Guanajuato. This is an immersion class located in the city of Guanajuato.
Additional Tips
There are many facebook groups that you can join for the area in Mexico you are most interested in. They provide a 1) community of like-minded people who either have been down the same or similar path as you 2) people to whom you can reach out to and ask a question or make friends/acquaintances 3) knowledgeable people to provide answers to questions you may have on various processes.
In Facebook, search for “expat Ajijic” for instance and you will see several groups and you can request to join.
