As fate would have it, I was completely unaware of the volcanic marvel awaiting me until the plane landed and the eruption was announced during the bus ride from the airport to our accommodations. It was sheer happenstance that I found myself staring at the awe-inspiring Sundhnúksgígar Volcano on August 28, 2024.
As I glimpsed the volcano through the window, I was left questioning whether I was dreaming or caught in a scene from a movie. Just a day prior, I had been exploring Europe—Netherlands and Belgium—so a bit jet-lagged I struggled to grasp the incredible sight before me. Iceland’s volcanic landscape, with its raw and stunning beauty, felt both surreal and exhilarating, a dramatic twist to an unplanned stopover.
Iceland’s Diverse Landscape
Iceland is a land of contrasts, where the raw beauty of volcanic landscapes meets glaciers. The island’s geological diversity is a result of its location on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet. Sundhnúksgígar is also close to one of Iceland’s most popular tourist attractions, the Blue Lagoon. Located just a short drive away from the volcano, the Blue Lagoon is renowned for its rejuvenating geothermal waters set against a stunning lava field backdrop. The bus driver announced that the airport did not see any flight delays or canceled flights due to the volcano on the day I arrived in Iceland.
He instructed us that we would be able to see the volcano on the side of the bus as we were traveling.
Update: The eruption site itself is not open to visitors, but it can be observed from the main Route 41 (Reykjanesbraut). However, stopping the car along this busy road is not permitted for safety reasons.
Experiencing a volcano in real life is nothing short of mesmerizing, and Sundhnúksgígar in Iceland is no exception. My brief layover provided an unexpected opportunity to witness the raw power of this active volcano.
