5 Reasons Why I’m Unclear About CLEAR After Signing Up at the Airport
What is CLEAR?
As someone who travels often, I decided it was time to explore options that could make airport security lines less of a hassle. When I first signed up for CLEAR, I thought I was actually signing up for TSA PreCheck. It wasn’t until I arrived at Bradley International Airport that I realized they don’t offer the administrative side of TSA PreCheck, but they do work with CLEAR. Well if that is not confusing enough…
So, I went ahead and finished the sign-up process at the airport after speaking with the employees who answered all of my questions, admitted was also a bit confusing, completing my biometrics, paying the fee, and preparing to give it a try for a year.
Now, I’m left wondering if this was the best option for me. Here’s a breakdown of my experience so far.

CLEAR: Move Faster
CLEAR is a biometric identity verification service that expedites security checks at airports and venues by allowing members to bypass traditional ID lines.
CLEAR isn’t just limited to airports; it also extends its services to various venues, including stadiums and arenas. This means that when you attend events like concerts, sports games, or festivals, you can use CLEAR to expedite your entry, allowing you to bypass long lines and get to your seat faster.
By utilizing biometric technology, CLEAR enhances the overall experience at these venues, making it easier and quicker for fans to enjoy their favorite events without the hassle of waiting in line. This added convenience makes CLEAR a valuable tool for both travelers and event-goers alike, ensuring that you spend less time in queues and more time enjoying the activities you love, so if you are someone that attends a lot of events, CLEAR may be worth it to you.
The Confusion with TSA PRECHECK
When I first started the online sign-up, I genuinely thought I was enrolling in TSA PreCheck. I wanted a faster, more efficient way through airport security, and like many travelers, I had heard that TSA PreCheck was the go-to solution. However, I later found out that Bradley International Airport (BDL) doesn’t offer the administrative portion for TSA PreCheck to complete the sign-up process in-person, so I was directed to complete my registration with CLEAR instead (or I could travel to Boston airport for example and complete the registration there). While both programs aim to expedite the airport experience, they work differently—and I wasn’t prepared for the switch.
The way I understand it is, generally speaking there are 3 ways to go through airport security. The first is the regular airport security line. This is where most people enter. Another way is TSA Precheck, and the third, is CLEAR. (There are other competing companies popping up now, such as Nexus.)
CLEAR seems to be the fastest way to pass through security, while TSA Precheck is the second fastest and then last is the regular airport security line.
The In-Person Sign-Up Process
Once I realized that CLEAR was my only option at Bradley, I decided to go through with it. The final registration took place at the airport, where they scanned my fingerprints, took a photo, and linked everything to my account. It only took about five minutes, which was a relief. While the process was smooth, I still wasn’t sure if I would get the same value out of CLEAR as I would from TSA PreCheck.
CLEAR vs. TSA PreCheck
One of the biggest questions I had after signing up was: Do I still need TSA PreCheck? The short answer is yes—CLEAR and TSA PreCheck aren’t the same thing. While CLEAR lets you skip the line to ID verification, you still have to go through standard security screening, unless you also have TSA PreCheck.
TSA PreCheck, on the other hand, allows you to pass through security without removing shoes, laptops, or liquids, but doesn’t necessarily move you to the front of the line. Had I known that beforehand, I might have reconsidered or tried to find another airport to handle the TSA PreCheck process which is what I wanted to do originally. I didn’t need to have the fastest way to go through security.

In addition to TSA PreCheck and Global Entry, two noteworthy competitors to CLEAR are NEXUS and CLEAR Plus.
NEXUS is a program specifically designed for expedited border crossings between the U.S. and Canada. Ideal for frequent travelers to Canada, it allows members to use dedicated processing lanes at designated ports of entry, including airports. NEXUS members also receive the benefits of TSA PreCheck for domestic flights, making it an excellent choice for those who travel frequently to both countries. The application process includes a thorough background check and an interview, but the investment pays off for those who regularly traverse the U.S.-Canada border.
CLEAR Plus, on the other hand, is an enhanced version of CLEAR that combines the standard CLEAR benefits with additional features. With CLEAR Plus, members can also enjoy expedited entry into certain events and venues, making it a versatile option for not just air travel but other experiences as well. This program is particularly appealing for those who travel often and want a seamless experience beyond just airport security.
Both NEXUS and CLEAR Plus cater to specific traveler needs, and depending on your travel habits, they might be worth considering alongside CLEAR and TSA PreCheck. Each program offers unique benefits that can enhance your overall travel experience.
Using CLEAR for the First Time
Using CLEAR for the first time on my trip from Boston to Dallas was a smooth experience; I breezed through security without any issues.
However, my return flight from Dallas (DFW Airport) revealed a significant drawback: CLEAR was not available in Terminal D, the terminal from which I was departing. When I inquired with the staff, I learned that CLEAR operates only in specific terminals, such as Terminal E at DFW. This information was not mentioned during the signup process, which left me feeling disappointed.
It meant I would have to navigate to another terminal to access CLEAR, adding unnecessary time and complexity to my travel plans. It’s a critical detail that prospective members should be aware of before deciding to sign up.

Final Thoughts: Is CLEAR Worth It for Me?
Now that I’ve signed up for CLEAR, I’m not entirely sure what I think of it. The sign-up process at Bradley was smooth, and I appreciate the convenience it offers, but I’m left questioning whether it’s the best fit for my travel habits. While I’ll continue using it for the year, I’m going to keep an eye on how much it actually speeds up my airport experience compared with other options that are available.
