The following is an excerpt from our video touring Guanajuato City.

Today, we are headed to a city I have wanted to travel to for quite a while. We are headed to Guanajuato City!

Guanajuato City is located in the state of Guanajuato and is the capital of Guanajuato. It’s about one to two hours west of San Miguel de Allende by vehicle, depending on traffic.

Guanajuato City is located in a valley, surrounded by hills, so when you go there, be sure to have good walking shoes.

I have heard so many good things about Guanajuato City, I heard about the beautiful colors, the hills and the landscape, the history of the area, and so much more. It kept getting recommended to me, so of course, I had to venture to see this majestic city.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site designation helps to protect and preserve the cultural and historical significance of Guanajuato City.

It also encourages sustainable tourism and fosters international recognition of its exceptional value to humanity.

If you have additional information, please drop it in the comments as I’m always trying to learn more.

Colonial Architecture

Here are some reasons to love Guanajuato City.

 (1): the colonial architecture.

The city is celebrated for its exceptionally well-preserved colonial architecture which reflects the city’s rich history and cultural heritage.

The historic center showcases beautiful Baroque and neoclassical buildings, including churches, theatres, mansions, and plazas.

The architecture is something that probably won’t be conveyed as well in this video, as in person. It’s something you definitely have to see. I was in awe the whole time.

(2): Guanajuato City also has a mining history. The City played a vital role in the development of silver mining during the colonial era. The mines were among the richest in the world, contributing significantly to the Spanish Empire’s wealth.

Layout and Infrastructure

The city’s layout and infrastructure were shaped by this mining heritage, which is important to know when studying the region’s economic and social history.

Third, Guanajuato City has long been an epicenter of cultural and artistic expression.

It is home to the University of Guanajuato, a famous institution for arts and humanities.

Underground Road Network

The City has an underground road network.

One of the unique features of Guanajuato City is its extensive network of subterranean tunnels and roads.

Originally built to redirect the Guanajuato River, these underground passages now serve as roadways, allowing vehicles to travel the city without disturbing the historical architecture.

Street Vendors

All this walking and I was famished. We stopped at a local restaurant that specialized in Mole. It was absolutely delicious, we ordered the sample mole platter, that had three types of mole, and they all were my favorite.

Guanajuato City also has street vendors with street tacos, gorditas, jugos, fruits and much more.

Love the Spanish Language

A lot of people ask about speaking Spanish in Guanajuato City.

While there are some cities like Ajijic, some parts of Puerto Vallarta and San Miguel de Allende that have a lot of English speakers, the more Spanish you know and can converse in is better. It’s okay if you are not an expert or fluent in Spanish, but do try to practice your Spanish so you can get better and be able to converse.
