5 Reasons to Love East Texas: Beautiful Scenery, Lakes, and Wide Open Country

East Texas

If you ever get the chance to drive through and better yet, stop in an AIRBNB for a few days, while visiting East Texas, it’s a trip you will be glad you arranged.

I just got back from pet sitting in East Texas, and when they say Texas, and specifically East Texas is God’s Country, you better believe it’s spot on.

Now I have lived in Dallas/Fort Worth area for about 20 years and rarely did I have the chance or opportunity to take the drive out to East Texas often. Let’s take a few minutes to talk about why visiting East Texas is worth the trip to plan.

Wide Open Beautiful Country

As someone who has spent much of the past 20 years dealing with gridlock, immense traffic, highway construction, and a fast-pace life, East Texas is a literal breath of fresh air.

Homes are spaced further apart, there are more farms and country roads. There are stunning lakes and trees. You can enjoy the sunsets and sunrises without seeing a lot of concrete buildings. It’s beautiful, and when you are there for a few days, our (my) nervous system can relax as I breathe in the fresh air of the country.

In this article today, I’m going to share several things to do and see while visiting East Texas and into the Tyler area including a visit to a local coffee shop.

Breathtaking Lakes

The area around Tyler is dotted with numerous lakes, making it a haven for water enthusiasts. Among these, Lake Tyler and Lake Palestine stand out as popular destinations for boating, fishing, and water sports. These lakes provide not only recreational opportunities but also serve as scenic backdrops for picnics and outdoor gatherings.

Open Areas

Tyler is home to numerous parks and open spaces that invite residents and visitors to enjoy the great outdoors. The Tyler State Park, with its 985 acres of woodlands, offers hiking trails, campgrounds, and a peaceful lake perfect for swimming and paddling. The park’s tranquil environment makes it an ideal spot for nature lovers and outdoor adventurers.

Rose Garden

No visit to Tyler would be complete without a stop at the Tyler Rose Garden, one of the largest municipal rose gardens in the United States. Spanning 14 acres, the garden features over 38,000 rose bushes and more than 500 varieties of roses. The garden is especially breathtaking during the annual Texas Rose Festival, a celebration of the city’s rich horticultural heritage.

Historical Significance

Tyler’s history is deeply intertwined with the broader history of Texas. The city was established in 1846 and named after President John Tyler. Visitors can explore its historical roots by visiting the Goodman-LeGrand House and Museum, an antebellum home that offers a glimpse into the past with its period furnishings and artifacts. Additionally, the Smith County Historical Society Museum provides insights into the region’s history through exhibits and archives.

The Azalea District

The Azalea District is one of Tyler’s most charming neighborhoods, known for its historic homes and beautifully landscaped gardens. Each spring, the district comes alive with the vibrant colors of azaleas, dogwoods, and other blooming plants during the Azalea & Spring Flower Trail. The event attracts thousands of visitors who stroll through the district’s scenic streets to admire the floral displays.

Cultural Attractions

Tyler’s cultural scene is rich and varied, offering something for everyone. The Tyler Museum of Art features a diverse collection of contemporary and traditional art, while the Caldwell Arts Academy provides a space for local artists to showcase their work. The Cowan Center at the University of Texas at Tyler hosts a variety of performances, including Broadway shows, concerts, and lectures.

Additional Things To Do

From outdoor activities to cultural experiences, Tyler offers a wide range of things to do. Nature enthusiasts can explore the trails at the Tyler Nature Center or take a leisurely stroll through the Tyler Municipal Rose Garden. For those interested in shopping and dining, the city’s historic downtown area is home to boutique shops, restaurants, and cafes. Tyler also has a vibrant nightlife scene, with numerous bars and live music venues.

Visit Tyler Texas

I had a friend who got married in Tyler, Texas many moons ago, and I loved my visit to the city for her wedding then, and I enjoyed it thoroughly now, upon my most recent return.

I was able to walk the downtown area, see the new restaurants and shops, and watch as they erected the Christmas lights. My visit was in mid-November, so it was the perfect time as the season was transitioning from the hot-hot summers to brisk fall evenings.

Get a Tour of the Best Coffee Shop in Tyler!

I had the pleasure of stopping in at one of the best coffee shops toward the downtown area. It was called the Foundry Coffee Shop and it is recommended for several reasons if you are in the Tyler area.

I believe they are connected to the church, Bethel, which is right next door, and from what I understand is rather prominent in the town of Tyler.

Foundry Coffee Shop

When I pulled up, I loved the quirky signs in the parking lot. While I cannot quote it exactly, the gist of it was if I were to park in the parking spots for longer than 10 minutes I would be “grounded” or something. I asked for clarity on these signs and was told the parking is for quick trips in and out and for those who wish to linger and bring a laptop, it’s recommended to park across the street in the garage and walk over. Free parking across the street. So, I toured the downtown area, then moved my car to the garage, then headed back in for a hot and delicious cup of java.

Beside the cool parking signs, they had about 6 or more large wooden circular tables with lights so you can sit outside near the downtown area, and take in the sights of the area.

It's Quite Large on the Inside Compared to Big Chain Coffee Shops

Inside the coffee shops, there were two good-sized areas to sip your coffee, and in the back a large area with what looks like a mini stage, then several coffee tables in the back, and a long rectangular table that could sit either 6 or 8 comfortably.

The Staff Was Incredible

From the moment I walked in, I felt comfortable.  The staff was attentive, engaging, fun, answered my questions and went above and beyond to be sure I was taken care of. I thoroughly enjoyed my time there and wish I was there even earlier in the day.

Now, even though this coffee shop was fabulous on all counts, one thing that was a little discouraging was they did not have decaf coffee. I don’t typically drink decaf, but it was around 4 PM on this day and I didn’t want to chance being up too late in my old age. Update: they may have decaf on your visit, but when I asked for it they didn’t have it.

This visit to East Texas and to Tyler was refreshing in so many ways for me. I was able to get out of the city, spend time with some new furry friends, and get re-acquainted with a city I visited over 10 years ago. It was a peaceful trip, as I viewed the lakes, and trees, on my drive back to the raging city.

Places to Visit

In addition to its natural and cultural attractions, Tyler is home to several unique places worth visiting. The Caldwell Zoo is a family-friendly destination featuring a variety of animals from around the world. The Discovery Science Place offers hands-on exhibits and interactive displays that engage visitors of all ages. For a taste of local flavor, the Farmers Market on the square in downtown Tyler provides fresh produce, handmade goods, and a glimpse into the region’s agricultural heritage.

Educational Institutions

Tyler is also known for its educational institutions, which contribute to the city’s dynamic atmosphere. The University of Texas at Tyler and Tyler Junior College offer a range of academic programs and cultural events that enrich the community. These institutions not only provide educational opportunities but also serve as centers for research, innovation, and cultural exchange
