Exploring La Cruz de Huanacaxtle: A Solo Female Traveler's Adventure - 3 Places to Visit

La Cruz de Huanacaxtle

Along the Riviera Nayarit, La Cruz de Huanacaxtle is a charming fishing village that offers a unique blend of local culture and stunning natural beauty. As a solo female traveler, I have had the privilege of living in Mexico for over a year, backpacking and exploring its diverse landscapes and communities. My journey brought me to this picturesque coastal town, for a few days.

The Temperature

It was hot. Like very hot. I was in La Cruz in December and it was humid. If you want to get out and explore, go early in the morning, 7 or 8 am, or after 4 or 5 PM is you can help it. I didn’t really take my own advice as when I am in a new city or town, I am always excited to travel around and see everything given my time contraints.

Backpacking Adventure

I was continuing my adventure north on the Rivera Nayarit. I just spent a few days in a nice Airbnb in Bucerias and before that Puerto Vallarta, both cities in Mexico I am very fond of. I was on a mission to cover as much ground in Mexico as possible. It was while I was in Bucerias that I made a decision that I needed to stay in places for a shorter amount of time, 2-3 days and move to new cities and towns faster.

I Felt Comfortable

I had been backpacking Mexico for a year. I felt comfortable. I could navigate the language, I could figure out the transportation, I could negotiate in pesos and pay in pesos. I was fully independent navigating in a foreign country and I had the confidence (still do) to be able to move around at a faster pace. I felt I adjusted to the culture, climate and language appropriately.

These are things we will come to learn by experience in a new culture, and/or a new country. If you are desiring to explore, go easy on yourself until you have the skills to move forward.

Everyday I learn new things. I learn new Spanish words, and learn more about myself on this journey.

It’s a very thrilling and exciting time to be able to do these things and I am grateful for every new city I am able to explore.

Lodging

I stayed in a cute hostel, met some great people there, they had yoga and music there but there coffee shop was down while I was there.

Things to Do:

I researched just a bit before arriving in La Cruz. I was fascinated to learn that many people from Puerto Vallarta or Bucerias come up to La Cruz especially on the weekend. I wasn’t sure why they came so far north, but I soon found out why. Check out the video below to join our journey as we explore La Cruz. Drop a comment if you enjoyed the video.

The Harbor and Fish Market

One of the highlights of La Cruz de Huanacaxtle is its bustling harbor, a hub of activity where the local fishing community thrives. The harbor is a sight to behold, with boats of all sizes swaying gently on the harbor. Each morning, fishermen return with their daily catch, bringing a fresh and lively atmosphere to the town. Visiting the harbor was an unforgettable experience, as I watched the fishermen expertly sort and prepare their catch for the day’s market.

The fish market, located right by the harbor, is a must-visit for anyone coming to La Cruz. It’s a sensory delight, with the smell of fresh seafood wafting through the air and the colorful display of fish and other marine delicacies. Here, locals and tourists alike gather to purchase the freshest seafood, making it an ideal spot to sample some of the region’s culinary delights.

As a solo traveler, I found the market to be a great place to meet locals and fellow travelers. There is also a restaurant on the harbor that serves snacks, where you can sit for a while, soak up the sun and stay for a while.

The Sunday Market

I met a great couple who told me about the Sunday Market, so I decided to visit it the very next day. There were tons of vendors set up, tons. one of the largest community I have seen in a while. There was local food, art and crafty projects, soaps, sweets, T-shirts, you name it, it was there. I met another guy from Spain who says he comes every year for about 6 months and set up his shop.

Major Attractions in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle

While the harbor and market are central to the town’s charm, La Cruz de Huanacaxtle offers much more for visitors to explore. The nearby beaches are perfect for relaxing and enjoying the sun, with soft sands and crystal-clear waters inviting you to unwind. Playa La Manzanilla and Playa Destiladeras are just a short distance away and offer beautiful settings for sunbathing, swimming, or simply taking in the stunning coastal views.

For those interested in the local culture, a visit to the el centro is also a must. It’s a lively gathering place where locals come together to socialize, enjoy live music, and celebrate traditional events. The square is also home to several charming cafes and restaurants where you can savor authentic Mexican cuisine. When I went there was also more vendors who set up shop selling local craft items.

Visit or Stay in Punta Mita

Punta Mita is a stunning resort area located approximately 16 kilometers (about 10 miles) west of La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, making it an easy day trip or weekend getaway for anyone staying in La Cruz. Known for its luxurious resorts, world-class golf courses, and pristine beaches, Punta Mita offers a slice of paradise along the Riviera Nayarit.

The area is a magnet for travelers seeking a mix of relaxation and adventure, with opportunities for snorkeling, surfing, and whale watching in the crystal-clear waters of the Pacific Ocean. The upscale atmosphere of Punta Mita, combined with its natural beauty, provides a contrast to the more laid-back vibe of La Cruz, allowing visitors to enjoy the best of both worlds. Whether you’re looking to explore lush jungle trails, indulge in a spa day, or dine at high-end restaurants with ocean views, Punta Mita is an enticing destination that complements the authentic charm of La Cruz de Huanacaxtle.

While I was in La Cruz I took a local bus
