7 Reasons Why NS Trains in the Netherlands are a Delightful Experience for American Backpackers

My Review of the NS Trains in Amsterdam

As an American backpacking through Europe in August, I had the chance to experience the NS (Nederlandse Spoorwegen) trains in the Netherlands, and I must say, my journey was both efficient and delightful. Here’s a breakdown of my experience with these renowned Dutch trains.

Let me start by saying I was impressed. I had no idea what to expect. I mean I had heard about the trains, and watched YouTube videos before my arrival, but still had no idea if 1) I would actually be able to figure out the train system in Europe (the Netherlands) and 2) would I have confidence in the system, would I use it a lot? I had so many questions, let’s dive into my experience.

Punctuality and Reliability

The first thing that stood out to me about NS trains was their punctuality. In a continent where delays are often a given, the Dutch rail system impressed me with its reliability. Trains generally ran on time, which is crucial when you’re traveling between cities and trying to stick to a tight schedule. On several occasions, I found the trains departing precisely as scheduled, which helped make my trip smooth and hassle-free.

In my two weeks in the Netherlands, taking the NS train daily, I only say one or two trains late. And when I say late, I mean it was one-four minutes past scheduled time.

Comfort and Cleanliness

The comfort of the NS trains was another highlight. The trains were clean, well-maintained, and equipped with comfortable seating. I appreciated the spacious interiors and the availability of ample luggage storage. As someone who enjoys long train rides to soak in the scenic views, having a comfortable and clean environment made the journey much more pleasant. The air conditioning was a welcome feature, especially in the August heat.

Wow! Yes, the trains were comfortable, absolutely. I could easily take an hour train ride without issues.

Safety on the Trains

One of the most reassuring aspects of traveling with NS was the sense of safety. Not once did I feel my safety was compromised. Locals use the train system regularly, and the environment felt secure and welcoming. Whether traveling during the day or evening, I felt comfortable and safe at all times. The trains were clean and well-lit, adding to the overall sense of security.

Ease of Use

Navigating the NS train system was relatively straightforward, even for an American traveler who isn’t fluent in Dutch. The information displays and announcements were available in English, which helped a lot. Additionally, the NS website and app were user-friendly, allowing me to check schedules, purchase tickets, and get real-time updates on train services. The Dutch travel pass options were particularly useful for a backpacker like me, offering flexibility and cost savings.

Most Traveled Routes

  • The Hague: A charming city with vibrant streets and historical sites.
  • Leiden: Known for its beautiful canals and lively market atmosphere.
  • Haarlem: A quaint city with a rich history and picturesque scenery.
  • Zuid: A modern area with excellent shopping and dining options.
  • Bijlmer: A diverse neighborhood undergoing exciting changes.
  • Amsterdam Centraal: The bustling heart of Amsterdam, well-connected and vibrant.
  • M52 Line: Efficiently connects various parts of Amsterdam, offering a quick and easy travel option.

Scenic Routes

Traveling by train in the Netherlands also allowed me to enjoy some beautiful landscapes. From the charming countryside to the picturesque canals, the train rides provided a pleasant visual experience. I especially enjoyed the journey from Amsterdam to cities like Utrecht and Haarlem, where the scenic views added a special touch to the travel experience.

Cost and Value

In terms of cost, the NS trains were reasonably priced, especially when compared to the value they offered. With various ticket options and passes available, including discounts for off-peak travel and international passes, I found the pricing to be fair for the quality of service provided.

Comparing with Amtrak in the USA

Comparing AMTRAK trains in the United States with NS trains in the Netherlands is like comparing night and day. NS trains epitomize efficiency and reliability, offering frequent, punctual service that seamlessly connects various Dutch cities and neighboring countries. In stark contrast, AMTRAK, which primarily serves long-distance routes, often struggles with inconsistencies in punctuality and comfort.

While NS trains are a model of modern public transportation, integrating smoothly into a well-developed network, AMTRAK reflects the USA’s ongoing challenges in advancing its rail and transportation infrastructure. The disparity highlights how the Netherlands has achieved a high standard in train travel, while the USA has considerable ground to cover in enhancing its rail services and overall transportation system.

Overall, my experience with NS trains was highly positive. The combination of punctuality, comfort, and ease of use made traveling around the Netherlands both enjoyable and convenient. For any American backpacker or traveler exploring Europe, the NS train system is a reliable choice that enhances the travel experience with its efficiency and pleasant service. If you’re planning a trip to the Netherlands, I highly recommend taking advantage of the NS trains to explore the country’s many beautiful cities and landscapes.
