7 Unforgettable Experiences You Can’t Miss at the BIG E This Year

The Big E - Eastern States Exposition

The BIG E, located in West Springfield, Massachusetts, has been a cherished tradition for over 108 years. It’s the largest fair in the northeastern United States, celebrating the unique culture, agriculture, and communities of the six New England states: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. For many in the region, the BIG E is a yearly highlight, offering a mix of nostalgia, fun, and discovery.

Growing up in Western Massachusetts, the BIG E was always a highlight of the fall season for me. Every year, I would make my way to the fairgrounds, and it became a tradition that I looked forward to. However, after nearly 10 years of not attending, returning this year felt incredibly nostalgic.

Walking through the gates, I was immediately transported back to my teenage years, seeing the same rides I remembered from the past, and even the layout of the grounds had hardly changed. The familiar sights, sounds, and smells brought back so many memories, yet there was something fresh and exciting about experiencing it all again as an adult. Such a memorable experience.

In this article we are going to talk about key events to see at the fair this year, best times to go, the State Buildings, things to do and see, tips for traveling solo (yes we went solo this year and had a fantastic time), how much walking I did, the food you can eat, and of course we share our pictures.

Tips for Attending the BIG E Solo

As a solo traveler, I’ve grown used to attending events and festivals on my own, and I’ve come to truly enjoy the freedom it offers. Here are some tips for making the most of your solo festival experience:

  1. Plan Your Must-See Events Ahead of Time
Take time to map out the events and attractions that interest you most. While it’s good to have a plan, leave room for spontaneous discoveries!

  2. Embrace the Freedom to Wander
Enjoy the opportunity to explore at your own pace. Whether it’s wandering the Avenue of States or sitting down with a tasty treat, savor your time.

  3. Pack Light but Smart
Bring only the essentials, like sunscreen and a reusable water bottle. Traveling light keeps you comfortable and unencumbered throughout the day.

  4. Don’t Be Afraid to Meet New People
Festivals are filled with friendly faces. Strike up conversations with vendors or fellow fairgoers to enhance your experience.

  5. Enjoy the Flexibility
The biggest perk of going solo is the complete flexibility. You can decide how long to stay, what to eat, and which attractions to revisit, making your experience uniquely yours.
